As a self-employed, peripatetic practice manager Sarah Fiddaman is only too aware that she needs a wide set of skills to ensure she can step in to cover practices at short notice. With this in mind, Sarah was keen to develop her knowledge and understanding of EXACT, the UK’s leading practice management software, and enrolled with Software of Excellence’s Academy of Excellence.
Sarah has completed both White and Yellow belt training and despite using EXACT for about 15-years, she was pleasantly surprised there was more to learn.
“I became aware of the Academy of Excellence through Robert Powell who was supporting one of the practices I work for, Zebon Copse Dental, in Hampshire, through the THRIVE programme. I completed the White Belt online and then enrolled on the Yellow Belt classroom-based course in June 2014.
In terms of training and the content of the Yellow Belt course I had a very good experience and I was very pleased with the outcome. I was impressed with the small class size as it meant we could build a relationship with our trainer Fiona.
There was lots of hands-on work and we were encouraged to ask questions and adapt the training scenarios to make them relevant to our own situation.
I usually work in small practices, so would probably be the only one who needed to reach Yellow Belt level, but I can see the potential of the different belts and appreciate how it could be used as a development tool for staff in larger practices. I will certainly be talking to my practice manager friends about the Academy of Excellence.
Over the years I have explored the EXACT software myself, and through practical use of the software I have become familiar with its functions, but despite this, I still found real benefits in completing the course. I work as a self-employed practice manager, which means that I literally parachute into a practice either to provide ongoing support, or to fix problems, then I move on. So being knowledgeable about the many different facets of EXACT is very important.
We were taken through the different processes available in EXACT V11, and learned how they worked in different sized practices. Among the areas we looked at were Workflow Manager, Recall Manager, invoices and insurance forms and security groups. At the end each participant completed an assessment to ensure they were comfortable with the learning.
The course exposed a number of new features of which, despite my experience with EXACT, I was unaware of. For example, Fiona showed us a different way of managing debtors that I didn’t know about and she changed my understanding of the capabilities of Workflow Manager.
By successfully achieving my Yellow Belt, I have learned many new things, as well as tips and tricks that I can take away and implement for the benefit of the practices in which I work. I am certain that my new knowledge will really help them develop into more efficient businesses and many of the tips and techniques I have learned I will be able to pass on to other members of the team. Every practice I work for is different, but they all have one thing in common, that is to have streamlined processes that contribute to them being really productive and profitable. I think my time spent with the Academy of Excellence will enable me to help my practices achieve this, as well as it being a really useful endorsement of my knowledge and I am certain it will help me professionally.”
